Evolution – why on earth? - you're a long time dead!
Dan – peering through a purposely made gap in the fence
'Hi Steve, that certainly looks the bee's knees, BBQs look more like cooking ranges these days.'
'Well, I thought I'd treat myself Dan, my old one couldn't keep up with my varied culinary skills!'
'You mean the singed sausage, half rasher of bacon and burnt-black beef burger you served up last time I was round.'
'Got distracted Dan – took my eye off the ball – you'll see this will be the 8th wonder of the world...if I ever get the thing assembled'.
'You could leave it in a big heap Steve – it might assemble itself over time.'
'Don't be daft Dan – that wouldn't happen in a million years, oh, I see, I know where you're going with this, it's the same kind of thing evolutionists expect us to believe – that everything just 'evolved', 'just came together' over millions of years; well young Brian Cox on the BBC must know what he's talking about – he's a scientist; things that began simple, changed or evolved into things more complex – didn't they?'
'No, I don't believe they did Steve, and the more you unpick all the many different theories, the more preposterous they sound and the numerous glossy books describing it using impressive artwork don't make it any more valid than it is – which is after all, just a theory'.
'Like I said last time Steve, why would a banana just form, or a cucumber, unless something knew they would have a purpose; why would the horse or the eagle form with no sense of forethought or foreknowledge behind it all; you could list millions of wonderful complex things, apple blossom, grapes,
nuts, cabbages, hummingbirds, cheetahs, animals that produce meats - like your sausages, bacon and beef burgers.
The Genesis account makes it clear that things were prepared for mankind to enjoy and eat.
Genesis chapter 1 says -
“And God said, Behold, I have given you (man) every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.”’
'I must admit Dan, when I watch those nature programmes I'm not always convinced with all the long time periods like 500 million years and stuff, but you say 6 days is all God needed – that's even harder to believe.'
'Not when you take into consideration the kind of being God is Steve; Psalm 90 says he is from “everlasting to everlasting”, throughout the Bible there are numerous references to him being the creator who has unlimited power, who actually had a purpose in creating all he did.’
'Mmmm...so why did it all go wrong Dan, I mean, if it was all so perfect to begin with why didn't the big chief in the sky keep it that way?'
'Well, God gave mankind freewill Steve – the freewill you enjoy...but there is a limit to what even you are able to do with that freewill; there are laws set up to ensure people behave in a sensible and good way, but sadly we know what human nature can be like and so if people behave in bad ways and break the laws, the courts are there to either punish or deter bad behaviour.
The almighty was no different Steve, because he created men and women he knew what was best for them when it came to behaviour, attitude and lifestyle – he introduced laws and principles by which mankind were to live – the world would be a very different place now if we had all gone along with what he expected of us.
You know Steve, it's no different to when you were bringing up your children; you expected of them good behaviour, good manners, respect to you and to others; it's dreadfully sad how some children are left to
grow up today, no direction, no boundaries and no discipline and all too often we know where it all ends.'
'Yeah, I can see where you're coming from Dan – I'll have to think about that for a bit though – have you got any verses I can go and look at?'
'Yeah, try Isaiah 40 verse 28 – “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”
And perhaps Psalm Psalm 148 verses 4 and 5
“Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.”
In fact Steve the entire Psalm makes a number of references to God creating things.'
'Thanks Dan, better get back to building this - Oh by the way, Edith across the way passed away, didn't quite make her three score years and ten as the good book says – still she's in a better place – with her old
mum...but I don't think you believe that Dan do you?'
'No Steve, the Bible doesn’t say anything about going to heaven when you die; death came about essentially because mankind began abusing the life he had been blessed with – as I said, the...'
'Yeah all right Dan – maybe that's for next time...'
'Bye Steve...stay safe.'
Dan & Steve have been good friends and neighbours for many years – the hole in the fence has been their own personal communication channel for all that time.
Whether it be the plight of Norwich City, the value of the pound or the price ofproperty, they like nothing better than “chewing the fat” and putting the world to rights............
Through a Garden Fence
(1) God – Covid-19 and a question for next week.
Dan – peering through their hole in the fence
'Hey Steve, what's with the long pointy branch you're waving around?'
'This is my own personal 2 metre social distancing measure – not bad eh?’
'That's never 2 metres Steve – looks as if you've thrown away the wrong end – I reckon that's just over a metre – anyway people will soon freak out when they see you coming towards them waving that thing'
'Actually I think you're right Dan – I have thrown away the wrong end...anyway, there's plenty of timberin the garage for Mk II.'
'Did you look at those verses from the Bible I mentioned Steve?'
'I did Dan – it's a huge book, a colleague at work says it's all a waste of time though – fairy stories.'
'Yeah, a lot of people take that view Steve...don't be put off though, you've already said that some of it seems to be making sense.'
'True enough – now I wrote those verses out somewhere – ah...here they are. That's right, Psalm 115 verse 16
“The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.”
'Were they the ones?’
'Absolutely – it's just making the distinction Steve that God lives in heaven and he's provided the earth for man – he created and prepared the planet so mankind could enjoy life and living in his presence – what
about the other verses?'
'Right - hang on, they're in this pocket...Psalm 53 verses 2 and 3 – here we are,
“God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, notone.”
'Surely that's not the way it is Dan, there are a lot of good people in the world – like my sister...she regularly works in the village charity shop and expects nothing for it'.
'Of course there are plenty of good people Steve...people who make a difference for good; but you see, God who created and gave life, not unreasonably expects a certain attitude from those who enjoy that gift
of life – he expects them to follow his advice and his instructions that would actually bring harmony and peace to the world - just like your father expected good and proper behaviour from you and your siblings...nothing wrong with that is there?'
'No I don't suppose there is when you put it that way Dan, and in a way I can see why you said that as a result of mankind not behaving in a good way toward God, so much has gone wrong.'
'Exactly Steve, we see in the world insurmountable problems, greed, hatred, violence, wars, riots, unrest, suffering...COVID-19, and much more – much of it has always been a part of human experience and suffering. All of it has arisen from mankind's selfishness, pride and arrogance and the inability to manage the planet to the benefit of all – worst of all he has willingly turned away from God and has missed out on the good things the Almighty promises if they would simply seek him.'
'Yeah, it does make sense Dan...but I really better get going, my shift starts soon – I still can't understand though how God can make someone from the dust of the ground – I think evolution makes more sense.'
'If you really start to unpick all that evolutionists say Steve it really doesn't make sense – things would never have 'arisen' or 'evolved' in the way people say they did; tell me this Steve, how and why did a random process that had no thought behind it provide us with all we have in nature today - apples,
oranges, bananas, wheat, grapes, livestock for food and milk, potatoes, humming birds, woodpeckers, owls, and I could keep on all day listing things – why would a carrot or coconut just begin to form?'
'Yeah...see what you mean, I know one thing..I'm off to have a bowl of strawberries and cream before work...and no, I don't know why evolution would have come up with those either – see you Dan – and I will think about the question about creation for next time.'
'Bye Steve...nice chatting...stay safe...'
